Abstract

A personal reflection on advances in software practice as seen through the activities of the Software Practice Advancement (SPA) specialist group since its foundation (as Object-Oriented Programming and Systems) in the mid-1980s. The topics presented at the group's conferences and meetings reflected key aspects of Software Practice over these years:

  • How practitioners have defined, understood and perceived the disciplines
  • The evolution of languages, tools, architectural patterns and approaches
  • Whether and how software practice has actually advanced over the years
  • What patterns, inventions and innovations have stood the test of time
  • What lessons of the past are still applicable today
  • How does today's changed technological and economic context challenge assumptions based on experience
  • What advances can we expect to see over the next decades

He works as a senior software engineer for Zuhlke Engineering Ltd, part of the Zuhlke Engineering Group based in Zurich.
